Los Angeles-based Bird Rides Inc. has stopped renting out its stand-up scooters in Providence, Cambridge and Somerville.

The two neighboring Massachusetts cities had sent cease-and-desist letters to Bird after its scooters appeared on sidewalks last month without the need of warning.

Rhode Island’s capital took an even more welcoming approach but sought to modify the corporation. Providence officials said they might permit the scooters on the trial basis if ever the company requested for a pilot program. From yesterday, however, the organization hadn’t applied.

Bird said from a statement yesterday that it’s voluntarily leaving the three cities right now but may aim to return.
